A few weeks back, I decided that after spending nearly 3 years growing out a pixie that I would return to one. Why? It saves me 30+ minutes in the morning. I don't need a brush, hair dryer or flat iron...I use half the amount of shampoo....and it is just fun and easy. Plus I was growing it out so I could wear it up out of my face. Anyway, Maureen gave me a pixie almost 3 weeks ago and I have already returned to go even a bit shorter since it grows insanely fast. 

One thing I use to style a pixie is a hair texture balm or pomade. Have you seen what is in some of these though? Some have listings 35 ingredients long. My favorite used to be John Frieda Sheer Blonde Spun Gold Shaping & Highlighting Balm, which I believe has been discontinued.

I used this years ago and loved how my hair shimmered with this, and liked how it worked in my thick, coarse hair.

The ingredients: Petrolatum, Mineral Oil, Fragrance, c12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides, Yellow 11

Today for DIY Thursday, I will be making a simple hair styling aid for blondes. This is what I have been using to replace the crude oil-derived Sheer Blonde product. You can use this for pixies and for bobs. It's also great if you have lots of texture and ends you might want to give a piecey look to.

INGREDIENTS:

1/4 cup Beeswax

1/4 cup Castor Oil

1/4 cup Rice Bran Oil

1/8 t.Mica

1/8 t. (maximum) Glitter

1 pinch of yellow oxide

5 drops lemon essential oil

5 drops chamomile essential oil

I like to infuse the rice bran oil with calendula petals overnight. It is not a requirement, though.

Melt the beeswax and oils over medium heat in a double boiler. Stir. Add in 1/8 t. each glitter power and mica. Add a pinch of yellow oxide. For this blond recipe, I like to add Sahara Sands Glitter and Ultra Shimmer Mica. Now add in the essential oils. 

Pour into tins, plastic pots, small glass jars, or pudh up containers. I am using 0.75 ounce push up tubes today. This product made 3 push up containers, 1 two ounce jar and then about 2/3 of another jar.

Let stand for a couple hours, then put caps or lids on.

When using, you literally need a pea sized amount. Warm between fingertips and use to add definition.

Not a Blonde?

If you have brown hair, substitute medium or dark brown oxide  for the yellow. Add a bit of Cappuccino Glitter instead of Sahara Sands.

If you wish to keep this simple, you can make this with just the oils and beeswax. You can use a wide variety of oils as well--hemp seed, olive, soybean, sweet almond--all will do a great job!
